Description

EN: The dire wolf, Canis dirus, was probably one of the largest canids that ever existed (only reached by Epicyon), with an approximated weight of 80kg. Although compared with the actual gray wolf it was a little bigger but with a smaller brain, dire wolf was much more robust, with shorter legs and an elongated snout finished in large teeth. Its jaw was very powerful, being able to crush bones. That's why it's believed that the dire wolf occupied the hyena's ecological niche in the American prairies, because if dire wolves have resulted only in a giant version of the common gray wolf, this two species couldn't coexist in the same place and at the same time, something that truly happened.

Dire wolf has its origins in South America, evolving from Canis ambrusteri. This ancestral species had extended throughout the American continent 800,000 years ago, but became extinct in North America. The South American copies eventually evolve into giant wolves, which returned to North America. There, they shared habitat with mastodons, horses, ground sloths and sabertooths, as at the fossil site of Talara in Perú and in Rancho La Brea, in Los Angeles. It's in this fossil site where have been recovered most of the copies of dire wolf, 3500 more or less, suggesting that, besides being abundant predators, they lived in packs like modern wolves. Its extinction began with the climatic changes of the late Pleistocene, when the American megafauna disappeared. Their preys became extinct, which was devastating for the dire wolf. However, remains have been found in Arkansas suggesting that some individuals could have survived until 4000 years ago.
