Spinosaurus aegyptiacus

-EN: one of the largest theropods with 15 meters long and a weight up to 7.5 tons, Spinosaurus aegyptiacus ("Spine reptile from Egypt") lived in the Middle Cretaceous, 95 million years ago between Albian to the Cenomanian in North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt). Its skull is estimated to have been between 1.5 and 1.75 meters, since only scattered fragments have been found, never a complete specimen.

Essentially, the problem of haven't got a complete skeleton has been a real problem for over this 102 years since Ernst Sommer, the famous German paleontologist who also named the Carcharodontosaurus, discovered it. The most complete fossils of Spinosaurus were taken to Germany, being destroyed by the bombings of the Second World War. Subsequently, the appearance of the theropod was greatly modified by the absence of fossils: from a completely terrestrial animal presented by Holywood to a four-legged aquatic reptile that walked awkwardly on land. However, the common denominator is that Spinosaurus was a titanic animal, no doubt.

The new discoveries that have been made in the last decade have allowed to obtain an image more close with the real one, although still it's based mainly on theories. Spinosaurus aegyptiacus was a bipedal theropod, with a somewhat peculiar walking on ground, but in the water managed to perform very well. The evidences that demonstrate its amphibious life style can be: the position in the skull of its nasal orifices; neurovascular openings at the edge of the jaws, like crocodiles; provision of effective teeth for fishing; presence of a hypothetical thermal sail, which would keep the animal warm while the rest of the body remained under water; dense bones, unlike terrestrial theropods, whose bones were hollow...

For all this, Spinosaurus is one of the most exciting dinosaurs that ever existed. Hopefully in the future we'll find a more or less complete skeleton that will reveal what this fascinating animal was like.
